Biblical Wealth Principles
For many, the quest for financial freedom feels like a spiritual paradox. You may have spent years in prayer, fasting, and tithing, yet the "windows of heaven" seem firmly shut while those outside the faith appear to prosper with ease. This disconnect often stems from a fundamental misunderstanding: treating the Bible as a book of mystical promises rather than a practical manual for stewardship.
The following outline breaks down these nine essential steps, moving past the "page one" principles of tithing into the deeper, disciplinary instructions of Scripture. By aligning your actions with these ancient blueprints—sharpening your skills, eliminating debt, and diversifying your efforts—you transition from chasing wealth to understanding the divine system that produces it.
Step 1: Sharpen your blade before you swing it. Before seeking capital, seek capability. The Holy Spirit first filled man (Bezalel) for craftsmanship and work, not just spiritual utterances.
- Proverbs 22:29 > "Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men."
- Ecclesiastes 10:10 > "If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct."
II. Action: The Ant Principle
Step 2: Get up and work like the ant. God rewards movement, not just meditation. Faith without corresponding action is "dead" and cannot produce a living income.
- Proverbs 6:6–8 > "Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest."
- James 2:26 > "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."
III. Strategy: Counting the Cost
Step 3: Calculate and budget. Wealth requires awareness. If you cannot manage the small amount in your hand through a budget, you cannot manage a million.
- Luke 14:28 > "For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?"
- Proverbs 21:5 > "The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want."
IV. Freedom: Killing the Debt Master
Step 4: Eradicate debt to regain your future. Debt is described as a form of slavery. You cannot build your own wealth while you are legally obligated to build someone else's.
- Proverbs 22:7 > "The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender."
- Romans 13:8 > "Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law."
V. Growth: Little by Little
Step 5: Reject "get-rich-quick" schemes. God’s system for multiplication is consistency over time. True wealth is built through faithful accumulation and the rejection of "wicked" laziness/hoarding.
- Proverbs 13:11 > "Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase."
- Matthew 25:26–27 > "His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant... Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury."
VI. Diversification: Multiple Ventures
Step 6: Spread your portion. The Bible encourages multiple streams of income (investing in seven or eight ventures) to protect against economic shifts.
- Ecclesiastes 11:2 > "Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth."
- Ecclesiastes 11:4 > "He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap."
VII. Preservation: Self-Control
Step 7: Guard your walls. Lifestyle inflation and impulse spending act as leaks in your financial city. Without self-control, your income will always disappear.
- Proverbs 25:28 > "He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls."
- Proverbs 21:17 > "He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich."
VIII. Association: Walking with the Wise
Step 8: Change your circle. Environment shapes behavior. Seek mentors and counselors who have already achieved what you are attempting.
- Proverbs 13:20 > "He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed."
- Proverbs 15:22 > "Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established."
IX. Integrity: The Clean Build
Step 9: Use honest scales. Dishonest gains are detestable to God and will eventually dwindle. A good name and an inheritance for grandchildren are the true marks of wealth.
- Proverbs 11:1 > "A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight."
- Proverbs 13:22 > "A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just."
Conclusion: The Source of Ability
God gives the ability to produce wealth, but the believer must execute the labor.
- Deuteronomy 8:18 > "But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day."
